Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
