Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to question certain decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
