The star has given the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which works to preserve the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was presented with the cheque on 16 October as his third album the album was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role local spots had in his initial steps.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," stated the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – roughly 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money assisted venues that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations received financial assistance in upgrading amenities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in large arenas helps the local stages, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his award winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when the band received the trophy in the year 1996 for their release the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would contribute their cash to the organization War Child.

In 2002, artist the artist divided her prize across a few good causes, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they needed better apparatus," the artist told a publication.

Two years ago, the band contributed their funds to the youth organization that supported their band, alongside other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year M People contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," said vocalist Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning affected the lives of others."

Last week, the trust announced it had protected a couple of local spots in that region, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in Southampton and the second in Bristol were acquired under the community ownership initiative, which is funded by a national body and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the venues.
