Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the fluid was most likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism left him speechless and required to be resolved quickly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
